Satellites in FE and HE

Satellite technology offers the potential of ubiquitous connectivity (especially in remote areas) and may offer some solutions to the last mile problem. With the growth of digital TV, satellite receivers are now commonplace in many homes.  JISC has commissioned a report and a series of pilot studies as a part of a broader review of the potential offered by satellite technology to education and its ability to widen network access and to enhance JISC service provision.  The review identified two specific areas where satellite technology has applications of interest to JISC:

Broadband internet access via two way satellite stations for learning centres and individuals in remote areas. A JISC/UKERNA pilot has been testing this application at 16 sites in the UK.

Multimedia content delivery which requires broadband capability and the use of Digital TV (this work is currently being scoped).

The first report includes an overview of the main providers highlighting their current and expected services. It also provides a general guide for those interested in setting up and deploying satellite systems in education.   The report covers:

  • Basics of Satellite Communications
  • Satellite Technology - Implications for Education and Training
  • Satellites in Education - Case Studies from Around the World
  • List of current satellite Operators

JISC Satellite pilot report

The pilot under evaluation in this report explores broadband access with special focus on institutions and individuals located in remote areas and the issues related multimedia content delivery.

About the pilot

JISC, through JISC Satellite Working Group (JSWG), collaborated with UKERNA to manage a two-way broadband satellite trial service to further and higher education institutions and individuals. The planning of the pilot started early 2002 and the pilot itself started in November 2002. The trials involved 17 HE or FE sites, located in areas considered as rural and remote: areas that are considered unable to receive DSL or cable modem broadband services within the foreseeable future or within a desirable timeframe, such as Lincolnshire, North Wales and the Highlands and Islands of Scotland.

The trial aimed to provide broadband satellite connectivity to off-campus learning centres, student residencies and individuals (staff or students) with the aim of assessing the feasibility of broadband satellite as a technology for Internet access and access to the JANET network.
