A new access management system is under development within the UK. The system uses federated access management, based on Shibboleth technology, to provide the next generation access management facilities to users and institutions across the UK.

The new system uses federated access management, such as the Shibboleth technology, and allows students and staff access to a wide-range of resources by using their institutional username and password.

By allowing users to authenticate at their home institution, the new system will also open up a range of other access management options not available until now, such as:

  • The same username and password for internal and external resources
  • Reduced administration of user accounts within institutional libraries
  • The ability for institutions to collaborate more effectively by allowing access to certain resources

How to get started

In order to use the new system, institutions and service providers need to join the UK Access Management Federation for Education and Research. The UK federation is run by JANET(UK) on behalf of JISC and Becta. To find out how to join the UK federation, please visit the UK federation website.

Some organisations may need to follow a number of preparatory steps before they can join the federation. These pages are designed to help institutions and service providers make appropriate decisions about how and when to adopt.
