The UK Access Management Federation for Education and Research is funded by JISC and Becta, and operated by UKERNA. The federation provides a single solution to access online resources and services for education and research.

Organisations interested in joining the federation should consider the many benefits it has to offer. They may wish to join as an Identity Provider (IdP) (eg. a university or local authority), or as a Service Provider (SP), (eg. a publisher or content provider). In some cases, organisations may wish to join as both.

Shibboleth: The federation uses the standards-based Shibboleth software, developed by the Internet2 community in the United States. Shibboleth defines a common framework for access management that is being adopted by education and commercial sectors across the world. See more information on how it works.

Eligible organisations were invited to join the federation from 30 November 2006.
