This project is developing collaborative relationships between the jointly funded ESRC/EPSRC Teaching and Learning Research Programme (TLRP) and JISC. It is addressing the need to support e-learning technologists and practitioners to appreciate the output and value of research and, reciprocally, the need for researchers to address the needs of technologists and practitioners.

Summary

This project is developing collaborative relationships between the jointly funded ESRC/EPSRC Teaching and Learning Research Programme Technology Enhanced Learning (TLRP(TEL)) projects and JISC. It is addressing the need to support e-learning technologists and practitioners to appreciate the output and value of research and, reciprocally, the need for researchers to address the needs of technologists and practitioners.

Background

The TLRP programme is a coordinated research initiative. Its overarching purpose is to support and develop educational research leading to improvements in outcomes for learners of all ages, in all sectors and contexts of education, training and lifelong learning throughout the UK.

The Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) research strand of TLRP supports innovation from the research fields of computer science and education. By its nature, TEL requires interdisciplinary collaboration across the disciplines of learning, cognition, information and communication technologies (ICT) and education, and broader social sciences.

There are currently 8 research projects in the TEL portfolio, which are due to complete in 2012. The JISC-TLRP (TEL) collaboration will add value to the existing research activities over one year, and will continue thereafter to the end of 2012.

Aims and Objectives

This collaboration aims to:

  • foster synergies between research and practice in higher education (HE)
  • encourage knowledge exchange between relevant TLRP and JISC projects (as well as partner organisations such as the Higher Education Academy)
  • co-ordinate and develop research activities and their outcomes
  • enrich the evidence base for HE learning and teaching, and making it broadly available to the HE community
  • broaden and deepen the relationship between teachers and researchers in HE so that each recognises the needs of each other
  • jointly elaborate themes for disseminating effective evidence-based practice
  • join and articulate information bases to afford synergies among HE communities

Benefits for JISC and JISC projects
  • in-depth research to inform innovation programmes before they start, during the innovation process and after they finish
  • the ability to articulate how technical innovations intersect with research challenges.
Benefits for researchers
  • an awareness of the research evidence required by the HE community and other relevant stakeholders
  • enhanced research confidence, competence and capacity in relation to technology enhanced learning.

Benefits for HE community
  • a heightened awareness of the potential for improving learning and teaching and of the potential application of research
  • an evidence-based perspective among stakeholders and policymakers.
