X4L Lit: Devising learning objects for use in literature

Start date: 1 June 2002

End date: 28 February 2003

Funding programme: Exchange for Learning (X4L) programme

Project website: http://www.llandrillo.ac.uk/JISC/

JISC theme(s): e-Learning

Introduction

There is a wealth of information focused web sites, either created by JISC or other agencies. These are currently accessible to students but within a learning context they are not used to their best advantage. They are often peripheral to the learning of a student and yet the quantity and quality of information they contain suggests they could play a more central role in the learning experience.

This project examines the types of learning activities these sites could support within the FE sector. It investigates this in the context of the skill sets which students at a variety of levels on academic and vocational courses bring to their learning. Thus the project operates within a learning matrix so that the needs of a true cross section of learners wishing to access such sites can be explored.

Aims and Objectives

This project aims to identify the scope and structure of the learning objects which need to be created in order to capitalize on this type of digital resource for a variety of student groups. This will be entirely relevant to the Exchange for Learning Programme (X4L) as the project will explore issues of language accessibility, student awareness, vocational context, additional signposting, learning guidance, student interaction, pre and post learning activities and assessment.

The project will deliver:

  • Learning outcomes from the following qualifications:
    • A/S Literature
    • A/S Critical Thinking
    • GCSE English Comprehension Skills
  • In addition, the strand will focus on using Learning Objects and the source content to promote learning for informal, non-qualification-based activities.
  • The project will provide learning objects based on source content for:
    • One item of poetry
    • One section from an item of narrative fiction
    • One section from an item of drama

Learning objects will be created for all levels/types of learning for each of the source content items.

The final report for this project is appended to this page as a WORD file.
