This pilot project investigates the requirements of a Service Registry for the Information Environment

Information Environment (IE) Service Registry

Start date: 1 November 2001

End date: 31 July 2009

Funding programme: Repositories and Preservation programme

Project website: http://iesr.ac.uk

JISC theme(s): Information environment, e-Research

Committees: JISC Integrated Information Environment committee

The IESR was originally developed by a team at Mimas in collaboration with UKOLN and the University of Liverpool Cheshire Team. It continues to be maintained by a team at Mimas.

The IESR describes collections and services available through the IE. It includes collections made available through JISC Collections, EDINA and Mimas.

Its role is to collect and disseminate information about a wide range of electronic resources so that other applications and services can interact directly with those resources on behalf of their users. It offers efficiency in that services only need to interact with the registry rather than having to find out about a wide range of services and collections.

The project sits within the Shared Infrastructure Services programme and its prime aim is to develop a shared service that allows brokers, portals and aggregators access to the content services available to the JISC community.

The next phase of this project up to July 2009 will concentrate on:

  • Improving procedures for contributing and accessing IESR data
  • Continuing to ensure that the IESR’s metadata schema meets the needs of users of the Registry
  • Encouraging resource providers to include information about their services within IESR and providing them with the necessary support and assistance to do so
  • Promoting the use of the information within IESR by other services and supporting such use
  • Maintaining IESR’s involvement and alignment with related initiatives in the UK and internationally
  • Raising awareness of IESR through the website, workshops, conferences and publications

Undertaking a formal review of the impact and effectiveness of IESR, in consultation with the JISC.
