Joining forces
The linking of digital libraries and virtual learning environments is required to provide a meaningful connection between learning activities and learning resources. A study was commissioned to critically analyse the issues associated with linking Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs) and digital libraries to inform this programme of work. The study undertook a literature review and a consultation exercise with a wide range of stakeholders including learners and a variety of staff across FE and HE institutions, government departments and bodies and commercial organisations.
The result was a vision for an ideal fully integrated online learning environment, which included seamless, one-stop access, all library functions online, and individualisation for the learner, flexibility for the teacher, universal accessibility and ease of use. This programme is a step toward realising this vision and will explore the full range of issues associated in creating joined-up systems.
Aims and objectives
This programme aims to explore the technical, pedagogical and organisational issues of linking digital library systems and VLEs.
Specific objectives are to:
- explore the issues of linking VLEs with local institutional digital library resources and services
- implement curriculum focussed pilots, based upon units of learning, linking VLEs to digital library systems
- provide models and guidelines for other institutions about the cultural and organisational issues related to joining up these systems in an institution
Work under this programme will be undertaken through nine projects that will undertake short practical explorations of linking digital libraries and VLEs and will explore the impact on staff, students and the organisation of learning and teaching issues.
One project has been funded to undertake an overall evaluation and review of the projects in relation to the technical, pedagogical and organisational issues.
The original call for funding for this programme was released as Circular 7/02.
