Extending the Applications of SmartCards: Internet Cash Payment and Personal Data

This is a pilot project which will build on the extensive experience of the University of Exeter in the use of Smartcards; the project is expected to deliver the following:

  • Review of appropriate card interface technologies, including Visual Basic, Visual C, Java and others
  • Fully-documented programs to allow a Smartcard to be interrogated by a procedure running on a Windows-based PC
  • Development of procedures to allow transfer of cash between Smartcards across an IP-based network
  • Development of a system to allow for records of achievement to be stored on a personal Smartcard
  • Dissemination of the procedures required to interface Smartcards to PCs to the HE community
  • A report providing information and advice on costs, performance, security and scaleability of Smartcards and the recommended procedures for their deployment
  •  A report on international standards for Smartcards, the different types of Smartcard available and the degree of interoperability between different Smartcards
  • At least one national workshop to provide details of the requirements for the deployment of Smartcards throughout an institution and to discuss applications in HE
  • The establishment of a Web site to act as a clearing house for all Smartcard-related information
