This study will report on all current VLE approaches and implementations, both in the UK and elsewhere. A means of categorising different systems will be developed, exposing underlying assumptions, implicit pedagogies, technical requirements, benefits and costs to teachers and students. Each system will be evaluated according to criteria of espoused purposes and effectiveness in achieving these purposes. This will be achieved by gathering evaluation information on actual experiences.
The contexts in which VLEs are likely to be most effective will be identified, including identifying successful support models, subject discipline based factors, and social criteria.
The report will include a paper document and a CD ROM containing demonstrations of major VLEs along with the project's evaluation data. This will make it possible for HEIs to make informed decisions on the adoption of VLEs.
It is hoped that this information will be used to inform further development projects.
