The aim of this project is to produce a case study which draws on the experiences of the Institute of Computer Based Learning at The Queen's University of Belfast in developing and delivering an open and distance learning (ODL) postgraduate course. The study aims to:

  • highlight the pedagogic, technical and resource issues associated with the development of a virtual learning environment (VLE) and moving to ODL based courses
  • demonstrate that computer mediated communication technologies may be used to support a range of teaching approaches and modes of learning

This study will be of interest to academics considering moving from traditional to ODL courses, technical support staff who may be involved in developing a VLE, and senior management considering an institutional virtual learning strategy.
