Essential to coherent resource discovery is the development of technology and infrastructure that supports interoperability between the vast available digital content. This programme of activity includes projects that explore developments that contribute to integration and advances in the access to digital resources. The projects include portal, subject gateway, architecture and standard development.

These projects are directly related to a number of other Information Environment programmes. As such they work closely alongside and contribute to the Learning and Teaching (5/99)Portals and Shared Services programmes. These projects are underpinned by the Information Environment architecture and standards framework.

Aims and objectives

This programme aims to develop an infrastructure to support a national union catalogue for monographs and serials in the UK.

Specific objectives are to:

  • develop services, based on standards, that will enable users to identify the information they need and to access it easily in a consistent manner
  • facilitate access by developing mechanisms to cross browse, navigate, search and retrieve and deliver resources
  • contribute to the development of an infrastructure that integrates national and local services for the benefit of the learner, teacher and researcher

The original call for proposals was issued by the JISC as Circular 5/99.

A significant formative evaluation was also funded as part of the L&T and Infrastructure Programmes, named EDNER.
