Repository start up and enhancement strand

This strand explores the use of repositories to manage and share content produced by institutions. This content could be learning resources, research data or research outputs. The projects in this strand are either creating new repositories or working to improve an existing repository.

What are the projects doing?

Some of the repositories have a subject or department focus and others have an insititutional focus. All of the projects are focusing on the sustainability issues inherent in turning the repository from a project to a service embedded in institutional culture.

There are 10 projects starting new repositories and 16 projects improving existing repositories. The projects are dealing with a range of content and issues. A brief introduction to each is included below.

These projects are carrying on the work of the Start Up and Enhancement projects in the Repositories and Preservation Programme.

Start up

Research outputs
Research data
Learning resources
  • Worcester LearningBox Repository Deploy and customise Southampton's LearningBox Eprints repository, supporting local management of learning resources, linking with JorumOpen for OER.
  • LORO (Languages Open Resources Online) Deploy and customise Southampton's Language Box Eprints-based repository, supporting local management and wider sharing of language teaching materials.
Mixed
  • Central Lancashire Online Knowledge (CLOK) University of Central Lancashire - Set up an institutional repository for intellectual outputs across UCLAN, research, teaching and special (eg digitised) collections.

Enhancement

Research outputs
  • R4R: Readiness for REF King's College London - Developing interoperable system to support REF, based on repository-CRIS integration using CERIF, a model that will be shared with REF stakeholders group of 100 HEIs.
  • Enrich - Enlighten and Research Systems Integration University of Glasgow - Integrate repository with research management and Human Resources systems to improve research management workflows and thereby deposit rates.  Probably support REF.
  • York Digital Library - Integration for the Next Generation (YODL-ING) University of York - Enhancements to York Digital Library including integration with several repositories (Eprints, Fedora) for deposit (via SWORD) and access (managed via Shibb), streaming service and VLE.
  • ERIS: Enhancing repository Infrsatructure in Scotland University of Edinburgh - Building on IRIScotland, closely tying institutional and cross-institutional development to researcher needs, develop preservation policies and planning for sustainability.
  • ResearchRevealed University of Bristol - Enhancing a system built under the CIP project to pull together various data sources about the University of Bristol's research to enable people to explore the connections between the data. The project will also investigate extending the focus to other institutions and organisations.
  • Integrated Workflow for Institutional Repository Enhancement (I-WIRE) University of Cardiff - Develop better workflows for Eprints deposit in portal environment, implicitly support REF, eg integrate Eprints with Symplectic.
  • PhilPapers 2.0 University of London - Enhance new philosophy repository by improving metadata ingest from a range of sources, and VRE-type tools such as groups, annotation, etc.
  • Welsh Repository Network Enhancement Project Aberystwyth University - Support Welsh research repositories by central support, eg for deposit, interfaces with VREs, and thesis harvesting service.
Research data
  • Enhancing Repositories for Language and Literature Researchers (ENROLLER) University of Edinburgh - Provide single sign-on portal for language / literature resources and tools, including licensed data.
  • CLaRION (Chemical Laboratory repository In/Organic Notebooks) University of Cambridge - Enhance chemistry data repository to accept all data from labs including from electronic lab notebooks, manage this in relation to various constraints (eg audit, REF, confidentiality).
  • myExperiment Repository Enhancement University of Southampton - Enhance MyExperiment as a repository of data and workflows, linking to Fedora-based eScholar, OpenWetWare wiki, Wordpress.  Also investigate curation of workflows.
  • Next Generation Embryology Using 3D embryo atlas frameworks for research and education - University of Edinburgh - Enable two 3D data models (embryo and mouse) to host annotations and other datasets overlayed onto them, and for these to be used in research and education.
Learning materials
  • OneShare University of Southampton - Build on EdShare and LanguageBox, based on Eprints, to create 'deposit once, auto-propagate' culture, policies and technology for learning materials.
  • SHARE Nottingham Trent University - Integrate NTU's IR (containing text and multimedia) with a learning object repository and with their VLE, embed use of these systems in lecturers' practice, investigate licensing, metadata, etc issues.
Other

At the end of this programme the projects will have produced new and improved repositories as well as guidance and tools that can be used throughout the repository community and examples of best practice for implementing and managing repositories.

How does this relate to other strands or programmes?

These projects are related to a lot of other work funded by JISC and happening elsewhere, the major relationships are listed below:
