Automatic Metadata Generation: use case identification and tools/services prioritisation
Overview
Use cases for the automatic generation and use of metadata will be developed using an approach that maximises the use of current community knowledge. Through knowledge-gathering workshops, commissioned expert reports, and surveys of the wider community it will be possible to identify a number of key use cases defining how metadata can be automatically gathered and how that metadata will be used. This approach builds on existing expertise and allows the focus to be on gathering use cases, analysing them, identifying tools and services, prioritising them, and assessing the main costs and benefits. The project will deliver general guidance for service providers in HE, a synthesis of previous work on automated metadata generation and a set of recommendations on tools and services required in the future.
Aims and Objectives
This study aims to identify the functions and use cases that automatic metadata generations need to fulfil and to identify the priority areas for developing tools and services that would support the JISC Information Environment.
Project methodology
The proposed approach depends on bringing together a community of people with experience in this field who can contribute to this study. These contributors will be able to participate on three different levels:
- Remote contributors: will not need to attend any meetings, will communicate electronically and will participate in surveys and reviews
- Workshop contributors: will participate in one or two workshops, in addition to being remote contributors
- Commissioned contributors: will be paid to produce sub-reports as part of the study. A key part of this approach is to be able to draw on the expertise of many people for a short amount of time (with appropriate payment) rather than rely on a small number of people. In this way those with the very greatest expertise can contribute to the study with relatively little effort.
Anticipated outputs and outcomes
The project will deliver:
- general guidance on automatic metadata generation for service providers in HE,
- a synthesis of previous work on automated metadata generation
- a set of recommendations on tools and services required in the future
