UKLight is a national facility to support projects working on developments towards optical networks and the applications that will use them. It will provide a "Point of Access" (PoA) in London with network connections to peer facilities in the US (StarLight) and the Netherlands (NetherLight) to enable international collaboration, and UK research groups will gain access to the facility via extensions to the SuperJANET development network or other means as appropriate.

Moving Optical Networking Forward

UKLight is a national facility to support projects working on developments towards optical networks and the applications that will use them. It will provide a "Point of Access" (PoA) in London with network connections to peer facilities in the US (StarLight) and the Netherlands (NetherLight) to enable international collaboration, and UK research groups will gain access to the facility via extensions to the SuperJANET development network or other means as appropriate.

Central funding has been provided through JISC to implement and expand access to the facility throughout 2004-2005; projects wishing to use UKLight are expected to seek funding through existing research programmes such as those managed by UK Research Councils (eg EPSRC or PPARC), though this is not exclusive and industrial participation and contribution to collaborative projects with the academic research community is welcomed.
