The overall aim of the project is to produce up to 10 case studies illustrative of innovative approaches in e-learning across the post-16 sector in the UK. The focus of these studies will be on the effective use of wireless and mobile technologies to support and deliver learning and teaching in the post-16 and Higher Education sectors.

Open University case study in innovative e-Learning

Start date: 1 May 2004

End date: 30 November 2004

Funding programme: e-Learning Innovation programme

JISC theme(s): e-Learning

Case studies are a powerful means of illustrating and illuminating e-learning practice. The use of mobile and wireless technologies as part of e-learning developments is a new, fast-growing area that lends itself well to illustration through case studies. Mobile learning is highly context-dependent; case studies can explore contexts of use and get to the heart of what motivates and sustains the  teachers and learners who adopt these new technologies. We share the vision of the DFES Unified e-Learning Strategy (empowering learners, being creative, offering flexibility, achieving better value, generating a professional workforce and fulfilled citizens), and we would like the case studies to show a range of innovative approaches, anchored in familiar classifications (e.g. problem-based learning, constructivist learning, apprenticeship, peer learning).

Aims and Objectives

The overall aim of the project is to produce up to 10 case studies illustrative of innovative approaches in e-learning across the post-16 sector in the UK. The focus of these studies will be on the effective use of wireless and mobile technologies to support and deliver learning and teaching in the post-16 and Higher Education sectors.

The impact of the use of these technologies on physical learning spaces will also be examined, together with lessons learnt.

The specific objectives are to:

  • Pilot templates from the e-learning models Desk Study for describing and evaluating instances of e-learning, and devise further questions that may be necessary.
  • Conduct visits to relevant organisations and interview the practitioners and learners involved.
  • Produce completed pro-formas for each case study, along with a 2-page summary document.
  • Liaise with the video production team regarding the structure and content of the 5 video clips which will complement the case studies.
  • Produce a Final Report describing the methodology used to conduct the work, summarizing the findings, and making recommendations.

Project Methodology

The criteria for selection of case studies will be based on effective practice, as defined by the JISC ‘E-Learning Models Desk Study’. The case studies will focus on examples where technology has been used as part of, or in support of, a learning activity. They will illustrate a range of different approaches to using wireless and mobile technologies across the UK, and will aim to include examples from school sixth forms, further education, higher education and adult and community learning.

Data for the case studies will be gathered through initial telephone and email contact followed by visits to chosen organisations during which interviews will be conducted.

Implications/ Deliverables/ Stakeholders

The case studies will form a publication for the JISC e-Learning and Pedagogy Programme and will be illustrated with supporting video clips which will be produced by a team from Edinburgh University. Case studies can be accessed informally, or in more structured professional development activities for teachers. We anticipate that senior managers will also be a key audience for these case studies.
