Review of gaming in post-16 and higher education
8 September 2006
The 'Learning in Immersive Worlds' report has been commissioned by JISC to explore the potential for the use of games to support learning and teaching in the higher education and post-16 sectors. The report will aim to demonstrate, through practice, examples of the pitfalls and challenges to using games in practice, as well as giving the reader an idea of the scope of how games are currently being used, and may be used in the future. The report will be of interest to learning and teaching practitioners (HE/FE), managers, policy makers and researchers who are interested in considering the use of games and simulation software to support their learners. The report will be available in October 2006 on the outcomes page.
Planning and designing Technology-rich Learning Spaces Events
12 May 2006
We are pleased to announce four workshops between July–September 2006 in partnership with the Higher Education Academy and JISC infoNet on designing technology-enabled learning spaces. These will focus on:
- social and collaborative learning
- inquiry-based learning
- blended learning and teaching
- strategic planning for the development of learning environments following the 2006 UK Higher Education Space Management report on the impact on space of future changes in higher education
The workshops build on the recently launched JISC guide Designing Spaces for Effective Learning. They will be of interest to senior managers in higher education with responsibility for space planning and management, including pro vice-chancellors, directors, deans of faculty and departmental heads, university registrars, and strategic planning managers. There is no charge for these events but delegate numbers are limited. Please book early to ensure a place. See further information on the events

Designing Spaces for Effective Learning
13 March 2006
A new publication from the JISC e-Learning and Innovation programme will soon be arriving on managers’ desks. Designing Spaces for Effective Learning will be launched at the JISC Conference on 14 March 2006 and features some innovative designs of physical learning spaces in further education as well as higher education institutions.
The focus is on the way technologies can transform space utilisation, as well as merely being ‘fitted into’ the design. Taking the approach of a walk through in an imaginary educational institution, the guide highlights current thinking about the use of learning technologies in key areas and their impact on these physical spaces. Richly illustrated, it also offers architect’s prototype designs and concludes with a checklist of key points to help senior managers embarking on new build and refurbishment projects.

Innovative Practice with e-Learning – new JISC publication
October 2005
Innovative Practice with e-Learning is a new publication from the JISC e-Learning and Innovation programme, which illustrates the use of mobile and wireless learning in everyday practice. Similar in approach to the earlier 'Effective Practice with e-Learning', this is an informative and approachable guide to embedding innovative technologies in ways that benefit both learners and institutions. Based around ten case studies from further and higher education, the publication illustrates practice that is already sufficiently established to be evaluated, and in the case of five of the case studies, supporting video clips give further insights into the benefits gained. The guide comes with a complementary CD-ROM which contains additional materials for use in staff development and in planning development of mobile and wireless learning in your institution. These include:
- five video case studies
- extended versions of all ten case studies as downloadable Word or PDF files
- an institution-wide e-learning audit tool
- three additional tools to plan implementation of mobile technologies designed for managers, practitioners and e-learning co-ordinators
Copies of this publication have been distributed to FE and HE institutions in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and to HEFCE-funded FE institutions in England. Innovative Practice with e-Learning can be read and downloaded online. Additional copies can be obtained from publications@jisc.ac.uk. Read more about the publication
