e-Learning Innovation programme looks at the use of innovative technologies and models to support e-learning, exploring the impact of innovative tools and applications in learning and teaching.
Dealing with pedagogical and technological issues, this programme will identify areas where innovative technologies can be harnessed to support learning, in particular the use of wireless and mobile technologies such as games and ‘virtual world’ simulation software, voting devices, multi-media PDAs, 3G phones and stronger wireless networks. Collaborative projects involving institutions and industry will seek to determine where and how these technologies may be best deployed, and where interfaces need to be developed with standard institutional systems. Projects in three key themes of mobile and wireless technologies, physical learning space design and gaming are underway.
What benefits will this programme offer?
Increasing use of mobile devices and wireless networks will require new models of learning and teaching. Early indications suggest these technologies will benefit learners by supporting individualised learning, as devices become smaller, quicker, cheaper and easier to use. However, learning content and standards need to be developed for these newer platforms, and institutions require guidelines on the design of physical learning spaces. Supporting case studies and guidance will form the Innovative Practice with e-Learning guide. This guide will illustrate current use of innovative technologies, and explore their impact on learning, and on learning space design, from an institutional, practitioner and learner perspective.
