Green technology projects to receive recognition at Green Gown Awards 2010
Have you been involved in a green technology initiative to help your college or university become more sustainable?
JISC is sponsoring the Green ICT Category at the Green Gown AwardsFor the second year running JISC is sponsoring the Green ICT Category at the Green Gown Awards, this time sharing sponsorship with the University and Colleges Information Systems Association (UCISA).
The award will showcase innovative ways that people in education are minimising energy consumption, carbon emissions, waste generation and other environmental impacts associated with ICT use, potentially including the development of hardware or software with environmental benefits.
Rob Bristow, green ICT programme manager at JISC, said: "I am very pleased that JISC is once again sponsoring this category in the Green Gown Awards, and I welcome the involvement of our partners, UCISA, in this sponsorship. I would encourage all institutions who have a good story to tell about their progress towards greening their ICT to consider making an application."
Last year’s winner was Queen Margaret University (QMU), whose thin-client computers have helped contribute to a more sustainable campus.
Jane Scott, director of marketing and communications at QMU said: “Winning an award shows how sustainable development can work alongside addressing the agendas of 21st century higher education. The award gives QMU staff further opportunities to share the expertise they have developed, within and beyond the higher education sector.”
Dr Chris Sexton, UCISA Chair commented: “UCISA is very excited to be involved in the Green Gown awards. The UCISA membership identified energy efficient computing as a significant issue in its biennial Top Concerns survey. ICT is a major consumer of power within higher and further education institutions, and the Green Gown award will champion institutions who use ICT in an innovative, environmentally sustainable way.”
Organised by the Environmental Association of Universities and Colleges (EAUC), the Green Gown Awards are the premier sector-wide showcase of innovation, good practice and community involvement in the area of sustainable development.
There were a record number of applications in 2009, with 33% from colleges.
The deadline for applications is 19 February 2010, and the final results will be announced at a gala banquet in London in June 2010.
