Access management describes the process of providing controlled, secure access to resources. It involves both authentication – the process of determining that a user is who she or he claims to be, and authorisation – the process of determining what resources a user is permitted to access. Access management is significant as both a key service and an enabler for other services and initiatives across JISC. It not only builds and supports the network infrastructure, but underpins e-Learning, e-Research and digital library activities for a wide range of audiences. As such JISC funds both services, through the
Athens service and the
UK Access Management Federation, and development work in the areas of access management and security. This work is supported through international liaison and knowledge exchange with
Internet2,
TERENA and
DEST. See information on the adoption of
federated access managment.
