Melvyn Massey: Due to personal circumstances, and also to an injury that I had, I had to thing about a career change. I thought, well, let’s give this IT a crack anyway, just bite the bullet. So I came on a two and a half day course – Computers for Beginners – and from then on, I’ve just been bitten by the computer bug, basically. I just want to learn more and more. So I was tempted to come on the Diploma programme. In the first year, we did a lot of finance and mathematics. That was mind-blowing for me, because I’d never even done maths when I was at school. When I was at school, I used to play truant when it was maths.
It’s vitally important that you can carry on doing that sort of work both at university and also at home. So you actually have a remote desk-top – workspace at homespace at university on our own screens in the computer at home. You’ve got all your course announcements there, any problems with your modules are all announced. You can log in, you can even access the catalogue from there, you can access and send an email from there. It’s just a fantastic tool, it really is. |

Julie Bairstow: My main areas that I wanted to cover were things like Flash MX, and especially the animation. But also the chance to develop a webpage that would enable disabled students access to information about what they would encounter when they came into the college.
I now feel I can actually perform on an equal footing with younger students, and it’s using the IT modules that’s enabled me to do that. My intention is to apply for a Fine Art and Design degree next year. |

Melvyn Massey: I’ve always had the feeling that I wanted to give something back, after gaining the skills that I’ve got myself. In order to do that, I’d like to be a lecturer. Get a teaching qualification, then come back here to teach adults to give them that experience back. I mean, what a story, how much of a rush can that give somebody. That’d be great, I’d be overwhelmed, I really would. |
